What is Sounds good to me?
Sounds good to me refers to two different courses designed to help parents and educators prepare children for formal school learning. The courses are designed by speech pathologists with input from early childhood educators, based on the latest evidence surrounding skills children need to thrive in a school environment.
What is the difference between the two courses?
Sounds good to me for educators is an extensive 8 module course (with over 50 short lessons) designed to be rolled out in the early childhood education centres alongside their existing programs throughout the year. Registration gives one year of access to 6 individuals.
On the other hand, Sounds good to me for parents is a streamlined version of the course with 8 lessons, with a running time of approximately 1 hour. Registration gives one individual a month’s access to the course and digital resources.
The courses are designed to complement one another, and we encourage parents and education centres to work together to prepare children for school.
What age-range is suitable for Sounds good to me?
The program is designed for children in the year before they commence formal education. Children aged 3-5 years can participate in all the activities, however, the focus is school readiness. By including younger children in the activities, you will be building up their earlier skills so that you can really focus on phonological and phonemic (sound) awareness before they start going to school.
It is also suitable for children already at school who don’t have phonological awareness skills.
What knowledge/qualifications are required prior to starting the educators course?
The course is designed for educators at every level, including entry level. The program can be used in child care centres, preschools, schools, early intervention and home day care services.
Can the program be used outside Australia?
The course is designed for educators at every level, including entry level, and the parents course is open to any caregiver with a preschool-aged child. It can also be useful for children attending kindergarten. The program can be used in child care centres, preschools, schools, early intervention and home day care services.
Do I get a certificate or qualification if I complete the educators course?
We are working to have our educators course officially accredited with the National Education Standards Australia (NESA). Until then, our own downloadable certificate will be available to members who complete the course content.
Can I just use one module or part of the training course?
For the educators course, you can’t skip ahead in the course material. You need to complete each module before moving on to the next. Trust us, it’s worth it!
Can I go back and watch the lessons again?
Yes. If you are undertaking the educators course, your registration gives you and your co-workers access to all the material for 12-months. If you are doing parent course, your registration gives you access to the material for one month. Go at your own pace and watch the lessons. You can revisit the material at any time using your login and password.
What is included in the registration price?
When you register for the educators course for $797, you (and five co-workers) gain access to the online course materials and resources for 12 months. You will also receive a resource kit in the mail. If you want access to the course after the initial 12-month period, you can renew your registration at the reduced cost of $297 per year for subsequent subscriptions.
When you register for the parents course for $22, you gain access to the online course materials and resources for one month. Following the first month, the subscription price is $5.50 a month (cancel at anytime).
Can I share the resources with my colleagues?
Yes. The Sounds good to me educators course is a centre based program. We recognise that educators using Sounds good to me work in a team. For this reason, when you register you will be able to nominate up to 6 people to gain access to the online course and materials. These team members must be working in the same centre as you. That way, you can implement the program together.
If your company has multiple physical locations (or branches) you will need a new registration for each physical address. Included in the price is one resource kit per registration.
We have also released a short course for parents, which complements with the educators course. If you would like to work closely with the parents at your centre, encourage them to consider taking the short course.

Do I have to wait until the beginning of the year to start using Sounds good to me?
No. You can start working with children at any time in the year. Don’t worry if you don’t get through all the activities and modules in your first year. Whatever activities you include, you can be confident that you are helping the children in your care to become successful readers.
My service doesn’t have a big budget for extra toys and games. Will I need to buy a lot of extra resources?
No, you won’t. Many of the activities and games will use toys and books that your service already owns and uses every day. A lot of the teaching can occur through incidental and spontaneous play.
There are some structured play activities that you may choose to use. You will find some of these on the USB in your resource kit as well as links to great resource sites, many of which are free.
Is the course accredited?
Not yet. This may change in the future, get in touch to let us know what you think.
Is there a lower price for individuals rather than a team working in a Centre?
No there isn’t. We think the educators course offers extremely good value for money. You are purchasing a quality training package at an all-inclusive price. You don’t have additional costs of travel and accommodation to attend training, nor do you have to pay extra staff for you to take the time off for training. You can complete the training at a time and place that is convenient for you.
Can we view a sample lesson?
Yes, our sample lesson from our educators course about Assessing the Children is now available! You can watch it here.
I have signed up for the course but haven’t received my username and password yet,
